Yes, it finally happenned. My beautiful City (Vancouver, BC) just had a suicide bombing a few days ago.
The man suicide-bombed the building where his ex-girlfriend lived. Fortunately for everyone, there were no fatalities, although a few small injuries did occur, and the building, apparently, was destroyed beyond repair.
I'm still scratching my head over this one. I lived in Israel for over a year. Suicide bombing for political reasons? That's very familiar. But, to settle a grudge with an ex? Isn't that a bit of an overkill? I mean what happenned to conflict resolution and therapy? This is Canada, for the love of ... we have free psychiatrists.
Though now I am thinking - it's not as weird as it seemed at first. I remember the case that happenned right next to us back in Netania: a terrorist wielding an axe attacked and killed and maimed 4 random women. He was just fired from a job, and he decided to do something about it.
The trick for the terrorist organizations is to make it look political. So they recruit people with pathological rage, severe personal problems, convince them that they are "really" angry at X, Y, or Z, and give them a political target. Pathologically angry people with short attention span get to do the short-range, dramatic acts, like quick bus-stop suicide bombings. People who have delusions that can be sustained for a while are assigned to long-term missions (hijack airplanes, fly them into buildings - that sort of thing).
Fortunately for us, in Canada, the persons with pathological rage lack organization, indoctrination, and clear political goals. (Coincidentally, we also have a very small military.)
